Colin phoned me this morning at about 7:30 with a query over his medication and to tell me he was still waiting to be admitted! (He had been discharged from the Walsgrave with specific medication and instructions). He had been told last night to have nil by mouth from midnight as they were expecting him to have his Hickman Line fitted this morning. However when I spoke to him again at 9:30 he was still waiting and a phone call from me to the specialist nurse confirmed that plans were already going awry. With still no doctor to admit him and the Pharmacist questioning his remaining medication (which is important to stop the tumour growing before chemo) I was getting more than a little anxious!
At about 12:45 I managed to make contact with the Consultant's Registrar, whom we had seen last week, and finally found out what was planned. He seems to have got most things on track again and Colin had already had his bone marrow biopsy. The plan is to fit the Hickman Line tomorrow (probably) if there is a suitable gap in theatre proceedings - let's hope there isn't a pile up on the M5! Chemo may start the day the Hickman Line is fitted but more probably the day after. We still don't know how long Colin will be an in-patient - it all depends on how he responds to the treatment. Hopefully by now they will have had their conference on his case and will have decided on a definite treatment regimen.
Hopefully he will have a better night's sleep tonight than last night when he had all of 3 hours! And that tomorrow brings better progress to a real start to treatment.
Jane.
